A yardstick that is now rapidly being the most-wanted recognition for movies, directors and film stars – the 100 crore club boasts of only over a dozen movies. We bring our top favourites.
Undoubtedly, the biggest blockbuster and taking the lead in the 100
Crore Club is Rajkumar Hirani’s adaptation of Chetan Bhagat’s novel
‘Five Point Someone’ – ‘3 Idiots’ (2009). The Aamir Khan and Kareena
Kapoor-starrer ha bdroken all box office records upon release and
crossed the 100 crore within 10 days.
The second highest-grossing movie in Bollywood is the Salman Khan and
Katrina Kaif-starrer ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ (2012). This is the second movie
to gross over 300 crores and production house Yash Raj Films itself
calls the movie a ‘historic blockbuster’.
The latest movie to enter the Club is Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika
Padukone starrer ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ (2013). With box office
collections of 270 crores, this is Ranbir Kapoor’s second
high-grossing movie – the other being ‘Barfi!’ with 175 crores
The fourth highest grossing Bollywood film is the sequel to ‘Dabangg’,
with collections of 251 crores. Although critics wrote it off in
mostly negative reviews, Chulbul Pandey worked his magic with
audiences in India as well as overseas. The 2012 movie also got its
fair share of publicity after the controversy over the ‘Fevicol’ song.
Making his entry at the fifth film on this list is the third Khan of
Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan with the sequel of the 2006 remake of the
original ‘Don’. Released in 2011 in both 2D and 3D, this movie also
starred Priyanka Chopra and was showcased at the Berlin International
Film Festival that year.
With worldwide box office collections of 230 crore rupees, the 2011
action movie ‘Bodyguard’ comes next. Another Salman Khan movie, this
time with Kareena Kapoor – ‘Bodyguard’ received a lot of negative
reviews despite its commercial success. It is the highest opener of
all time across India.
This is the fourth Salman Khan movie out of the five that entered the
100 Crore Club, including ‘Ready’. Salman Khan’s avatar as the
policeman Chulbul Pandey earned him a lot of accolades, as well as 215
crores at the box office. This was the debut movie of Sonakshi Sinha,
catapulting her into fame and glory from thereon.
Both SRK and Katrina Kaif’s second movie in the 100 Crore Club – ‘Jab
Tak Hai Jaan’ also had its own share of controversies before releasing
in 2012. Besides Ajay Devgn’s accusation of Yash Raj’s monopolistic
business practices, this was also the latter’s last movie before he
passed away.
SRK’s third movie in the 100 Crore Club is the controversial ‘Ra.One’,
accused of plagiarism from the Tamil sci-fi ‘Enthiran’ and Hollywood
movies like ‘Terminator 2: Judgment Day’ and ‘Iron Man’ (2008). While
it may be one of the highest grossing movies of 2011, it also won the
Worst Director at the Golden Kela Awards and Ghanta Awards.
The last on this list is the 2012 Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha
starrer ‘Rowdy Rathore’. Besides ‘Rowdy Rathore’, Akshay Kumar’s other
hit being ‘Housefull 2’. Interestingly, ‘Rowdy Rathore’ saw the return
of Akshay Kumar as an action hero after seven long years!
2013 so far has seen two more entries in this coveted club. Besides
‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’, ‘Raanjhanaa’ and ‘Aashiqui 2’ are the
latest to join the club.
Aditya Roy Kapur and Shraddha Kapoor were the lead pair in 'Aashiqui 2' .
